Flamita de Oaxaca

Located way down Main Street in Woodland is Flamita de Oaxaca. This ‘restaurant’ is literally on the sidewalk next to the Walmart parking lot. They put up tables, chairs, and some really bright lights so you can’t miss it. And that’s how I found out about the place. I was so curious about what was going on here that I just had to go and see it for myself.

There are taco trucks all around Woodland - and many of them are really great, but you don’t see a place straight up set up shop on the sidewalk. And furthermore, quite a few people were there either eating or waiting for food. That just told me that this was a food stand of the people.

I parked my car in the Walmart parking lot near the tent that they set up and looked over the menu. It’s a simple one with options like tacos, burritos, tortas, and the like. Meat options include pastor, asada, pollo, chorizo, lengua, and cabeza. There was no pricing on the menu at all and I believe it was a cash only place. Turns out tacos are $2.50 each. Not bad, so I went for five of ‘em and a Coke.

You can get the food to-go or sit at one of their little tables. I really wanted to enjoy the atmosphere so I ate in. I waited for the food to cook up and enjoyed watching all the cars go by Main Street. It was definitely a vibe.

The food was very good. The different meats were great and the best part of it all was topping the tacos with all the onions and salsa that was available there. After getting the tacos, you have to make sure to go to the place where they keep all the toppings. I piled it on and the end result was a very delicious meal with the right notes of savory, salty, and freshness from the condiment bar.

If there is one thing you need to try, it’s the pastor. Pastor is pork, and it is cooked on a spit with flames that dance around it. It’s quite a sight and you can’t miss it when you go to Flamita de Oaxaca. The meat has an exquisite flavor that is accented by the crispness that the flame gives the outer portion of it. This meat is heads and shoulders the best choice here. It’s no wonder they list it first on their list of meats available.

I thoroughly enjoyed eating at Flamita de Oaxaca. I would definitely go again and recommend it to anyone looking for a delicious, authentic, Mexican taco meal.

Fifteen years ago I would have never come to a place like this to eat. I’m glad I got over myself and opened up my mind and taste buds to delicious new experiences!
