Iron Horse Tavern

You’ll find Iron Horse tavern in the fabulous R Street corridor amongst a host of other great places to dine in Sacramento. It is housed on a corner location and features both indoor and outdoor seating. This popular restaurant has a lively atmosphere, full bar, and a menu that is very diverse. Iron Horse tavern is unique in that it is a great place for a morning meal or for dinner! No matter when you choose to visit, it will be open and ready to serve you something delicious.

With a full bar and the word ‘tavern’ in its name, you’d think the food here would be your traditional bar style. It isn’t.

Iron Horse Tavern is full of surprising menu items that vary from Asian styles to European to American.

One of the main highlights of the menu is the mac ‘n’ cheese bar. The mac ‘n’ cheese is very rich and is available in a variety of different styles. Their tavern mac is the standard mac ‘n’ cheese and is everything you’d expect. Gooey cheese and noodles - simple. You can jazz up your order with jalepenos, truffles, bacon and eggs, lobster, ham, chorizo, and basil. I’ve never seen a place with more styles of mac ‘n’ cheese than here!

If you’re feeling pizza, Iron Horse has a number of different kinds on the menu. You can go with a standard pepperoni pizza or branch out with prosciutto, garlic shrimp, or short rib. They even offer Impossible Italian sausage as an option if you’d like something meaty without the meat on it.

On my most recent visit to Iron Horse Tavern a coworker and I happened to order two different items on the menu, but both had a Korean spin on them. She ordered a banh mi Impossible burger while I had the Korean Fried Chicken. Her burger came with a vegan burger patty, pickled carrots and cucumbers with jalapenos, avocado, cilantro, and Asian bbq sauce. It definitely had a ton of flavors going on with it. A side of chips came with the meal to compliment it.

My Korean Fried Chicken dish had chunks of fried chicken in a spicy sauce on a bed of rice with sunny side eggs to accompany it. This dish was packed with bold flavors and was definitely had a nice kick of spice. If you’re into something with a strong flavor profile, this dish might be right up your alley.

Other things on the menu really caught my interest as well and I’d love to give them a try the next time I visit Iron Horse Tavern. The loco moco, tavern fried chicken ‘n’ pancakes, and Hawaiian style ribeye steak are all things that I’m looking forward to having in the future.

Thought the restaurant was quite busy, we were able to get a table pretty quickly. The service was also very quick and the food came out well presented and faster than I thought it would given the amount of people eating there that day.

I found our waitress to be very friendly and accommodating. The service was top notch and I really couldn’t have asked for more in that regard.

Iron Horse Tavern is a great restaurant to visit and dine at. It’s varied menu is very surprising and I’m sure you’ll see something there that will peak your interest!
