New Kathmandu Kitchen

I was excited to try New Kathmandu Kitchen as it came up as a new restaurant in town. When I arrived it turned out I had been at this location a few times before already! Before becoming New Kathmandu Kitchen it was an Indian restaurant that served distinctive naan pizzas, and before that it was a non-traditional Mexican restaurant. I thought that the Indian restaurant was relatively new so it surprised me that it had turned over already. No matter, I was ready for some Nepali and Indian dishes here!

The business has a very mom & pop feel to it and could possibly be family run. The service was good, but it didn’t have a professional feel to it. Maybe the wait staff was new, but they certainly felt a bit unpolished in that department.

The restaurant itself was well kept and clean. The interior has always had a quirkiness about it, but is functional for a restaurant of its size. On our visit we took the main table near the window as our party was relatively large. The restaurant had a few customers besides us on a calm Thursday night, so I felt that at least business was decent for them.

The food at New Kathmandu Kitchen is a mix of Nepali and Indian cuisine. I have to admit that I’m not well-versed in Nepalis food, so I tended to go more for the familiar Indian dishes. And of course I went with the tiki masala with a garlic naan on the side. The dish was pretty much what I expected it to be and did a good job of satisfying my desire for some Indian cuisine that night. I thought that the naan was especially good and I enjoyed it quite a bit.

One of my friends chose the butter chicken and that dish was also very nicely prepared. The sauce was creamy and went excellently over the white rice that accompanied her meal.

If you’d like a little taste of their most popular appetizers, there is a sampler platter that you can select. I did so and was able to try a number of different appetizers. All the appetizers on the sampler were of the fried variety. It would have been nice to have more of a variety of cooking methods available, but I understand that these items are the ones most frequently ordered, and it was nice to just be able to see what each was like. This platter came with vegetable pakoras, a somosa, chicken pokoras, and shrimp pokoras.

The menu here is very deep with options such as seafood, lamb, and a great deal of vegetarian dishes. It makes a great choice for a party who has a mix of different eating variations within.

Overall I’d say that New Kathmandu Kitchen is a solid choice for dinner. The flavors are good, but there isn’t too much here that sets it apart from other similar restaurants in Sacramento. If you’re in the neighborhood and have a craving for this style of food, New Kathmandu Kitchen is a restaurant worth going to.
