Fukumi Ramen

I was discussing ramen in Sacramento with a friend this week and we conversed about how much ramen has leveled up in town. About ten years ago there were maybe two solid ramen restaurants in Sacramento, but that number has certainly gone up. I decided to give Fukumi Ramen a try. There are a few different locations around the Sacramento area and I chose to try the one in Natomas. It’s located in a shopping plaza amongst many other restaurants and stores. A Five Guys used to be in a spot right next to Fukumi, but looks like they vacated a while back. Hopefully Fukumi won’t suffer such a fate.

The restaurant is small/medium sized with a minimalistic modern atmosphere that compliments the quality of the food served. The color scheme in the restaurant is grey with wood accents and plenty of light from the windows. It’s clean and comfortable and would make a great spot to eat at any time of the day.

I came in at around lunchtime on a Tuesday and the restaurant was not crowded, but there were certainly patrons enjoying a meal during this time. I was able to get a seat immediately and the server came over with the menu right away.

The menu is a very modern one-page affair. On the front you can select the style of ramen you would like. It points out that the ramen broth takes 72-hours to prepare. That got me pretty excited because that amount of time would mean that it should be loaded with flavor. I ended up trying the Tonkatsu Salt Ramen. This comes with thin noodles, broth flavored with salt based sauce, pork chashu, egg, green onions, sprouts, red ginger, and black garlic oil.

The star of the bowl in my opinion was the pork chashu. In fact, I should have ordered an extra slice in my ramen… it was that good! As the name suggested, the ramen was on the saltier side. The pork chashu had a sweetness to it that really complimented the rest of the bowl. The pork also had a texture that was very soft and satisfying.

On the side I decided to give the chicken karaage a try. Karaage is something I usually order when I’m out for ramen. The karaage here was very well done and came out piping hot. The chicken was a good size and came with a nice aioli sauce.

In all I found Fukumi Ramen to be of very high quality. The ingredients were fresh and well-prepared. Personally, I found the thin noodles to be a bit too thin for my liking, but that’s just a personal preference of my own. Fukumi is a great ramen spot and one that I would certainly recommend to any ramen lovers out there!
