The Mill
The Mill in Sacramento is a cafe that provides a deliciously crafted cup of coffee along with some select food items. It’s a beautiful and elegant experience to enjoy by yourself or with a few friends. The cafe is comfortable and subtly elegant - much like the coffees they craft. There are two locations in Sacramento - one in midtown and the other near the Sacramento State University campus. I have the privilege of trying the midtown location. This location is in a nice shady spot so that you can enjoy your time there either outside or in.
The Mill reminds me a little of Temple Coffee Roasters in town. Temple is a bit more widespread, but the vibes are common. The cafe is very well presented with gorgeous wood tables and a lot of light that comes in from the large front window. Walking up to the counter you can see their pastries as well as the coffee and tea menu.
On my visit I gave their cold brew a try. Their cold brew comes with a strong coffee topped with a thick and rich heavy cream. The cream is what really makes this coffee. Unlike a place like Starbucks, the cream on the top oozes with a premium quality. It’s thick and robust with a complex flavor rather than just sweet. In fact, the cream is not that sweet at all. It has a mild milkiness to it that is very satisfying. When you drink from the cup and get the cream and cold brew together, that’s where the magic happens. This is certainly a drink I would come back again and again for.
One of the food items that the Mill is known for are their waffles. There are pastries like many other cafes carry, but the Mill serves hot waffles up until about an hour before they close. I’ve seen pictures of the waffles here all over social media so I just had to see what the fuss was all about.
And the verdict is - the waffles are great! They are not too thick or thin, they are just right. There is a nice crisp to the waffle while the small interior remains nice and fluffy. It comes topped with powdered sugar to add a bit of sweetness and to make the waffle look extra delicious. You can choose to pair the waffle with jam or syrup. I typically have syrup at restaurants so I wanted to give the jam a try. I found it was a great compliment to the waffle and would whole heartedly recommend it.
When visiting the Mill you get the sense that everything is of the highest quality. From the food to the decor, things here are tastefully done. It’s a cafe that I think many would really enjoy visiting. It joins the small list of cafes that are the best in town.
