Buckhorn Bar + Grill
Buckhorn Bar + Grill has taken over the old Mary’s Pizza Shack in Dixon. Mary’s Pizza Shack was a beloved mainstay in Dixon for a very long time… so Buckhorn has some big shoes to fill.
On my visit to Buckhorn Bar + Grill I found the restaurant to be very modern and inviting. When you come in you are greeted with the main counter - this is a restaurant where you order first before sitting. There are large screens above with the menu on it, but you can also just use the physical menus on the counter as well if that’s easier. Everything is very clear and the person at the counter was friendly and offered to assist me if I had any questions.
As this is a BBQ restaurant, I decided to try the two protein combo to get a good impression of the food. The combo plate comes with my choice of two proteins (tri-tip, ribs, chicken, salmon, pulled pork, or sausage) as well as two sides and my choice of bread. I ended up going with the tri-tip and ribs. I chose the tri-tip because the Buckhorn chain is known for their tri-tip… and as for the ribs… I just felt like ribs!
The tri-tip is made to order, so you can select how done you’d like it. I went with medium and it came out just about medium, maybe a touch over, but nothing egregious. I found the tri-tip to have a nice flavor and it was easy to cut into and eat. I thought the tri-tip needed a little something to go with it, and thankfully Buckhorn has you covered with when in comes to sauces. There is a sauce station where you can select their standard BBQ sauce as well as a spicier one amongst others. You can really sauce to your heart’s content here.
The ribs needed no sauce at all as it was packed full of flavor. The top had a nice charred curst that I loved and the inside was exactly as it should have been. It was my favorite thing I had at the Buckhorn. The ribs were also extremely well portioned and I only could really eat half of it during my visit.
For side I got the onion rings and the beans. The onion rings came with a side of ranch and they were good, solid rings. They weren’t anything amazing, but they were exactly as an onion ring should be. The beans were a bit hardier than I wanted. If you’re really hungry, these will certainly do the job to fill you up. I guess I was just wanting some plain ‘ol baked beans. These were a level above that for sure.
The bread option was between dinner rolls, cornbread muffin, or jalepeno cheddar cornbread muffin. I split the difference and went with the standard cornbread muffin, but in retrospect, I think I would have liked to try the jalepeno cheddar one… maybe next time!
Also, next time I would probably get the broccoli salad, as it is a famous dish for Buckhorn. I’ve had it from another location and I certainly would recommend it.
With all the meat on the menu, the price can get a little high per person, so if you’re on a really tight budget, this may not be the place for you. But if you’re looking to fill up on some BBQ, Buckhorn is a great choice in Dixon.
