Mishka’s Cafe

Mishka’s Cafe in Davis has been a mainstay in Davis every since I attended UCD. It opened in 1995 and has really thrived throughout the years. Though it is a very popular coffee spot in town, I have only been there a handful of times. This cafe has an older feel to it than the places around it like Philz and Temple. It’s cozier and has this comfortable worn-in vibe rather than a place with the newest trends in design.

Perhaps one of the reasons I’ve avoided Mishaka’s is because of its popularity. Every time I’ve come to the cafe it is crowded with people. When UC Davis is in session, the entire cafe is typically full of students studying with their laptops. There is ample seating, but even with all those tables and chairs it can sometimes be hard to find a spot to settle down in.

When you come to Mishka’s you’ll pass by the main case of pastries and food before getting to the ordering area. The main case showcases many delicious cafe items such as croissants, muffins, and cookies. There is quite a selection to choose from so I’m sure you’ll find something you’d like if you are in the mood for a bit of food.

On my visit to Mishka’s I tried both a savory item and a sweeter item. The savory item I had was the ham and cheese croissant. I found it to be of very good quality, but like many other cafes, I wasn’t a fan of how they warm it up. They either use a microwave or one of those quick heaters similar to Starbucks. Instead of having a nice crisp exterior, the croissant was a bit soft, hot, and flabby. So as good as the item was, I found the preparation to be a bit lacking. The same was true with the chocolate croissant I ordered as the sweet item I wanted to try. I found the croissant to be high quality and well crafted, but the heating process was a bit of a let down.

In terms of their coffee, Mishka’s offers a solid variety. You’ll find the cafe staples and of course you can select the type of milk you would like in it. Overall the coffee that I have had here is about average for what a cafe serves. They do have specials to spice things up a bit to add a bit of variety - and that is greatly appreciated.

I didn’t find the drinks to be particularly pretty for photos, but the drinks to hold up if you’re just looking for a spot to sit and sip or do some work. I find that the customers who come to Mishka’s really do appreciate their solid quality and steadfast way the cafe is run.

Mishka’s popularity amongst those in Davis is not out of luck. It’s a beautiful cafe that is inviting and a place that you could really spend hours in.
