Serrano’s Cafe

Serrano’s Cafe in West Sacramento is definitely one of those hidden gems for delicious food in the city. The locals know of it, but I have a feeling many are still haven’t gotten a chance to visit this great restaurant. Serrano’s is located in a strip mall amongst many other businesses such as Dollar Tree, other restaurants, and random places. It doesn’t have a high end feel and could easily be driven past without notice. It’s a humble looking restaurant, but shouldn’t be missed!

If you’d like to give Serrano’s a try, you’ll have to do it during breakfast or lunch hours because they pretty much close everyday at 3pm. The restaurant is mid-sized, but it can get pretty busy during peak hours. There’s both indoor seating as well as a little outdoor patio area that has been built out into the parking lot.

Serrano’s Cafe can be classified as a greasy spool style diner as what you’ll find here are your traditional pancakes, eggs, sausage, and bacon type breakfast. And it’s pretty much perfect for this type of style. The portions are big and will fill you up. Compared to Denny’s and IHOP, Serrano’s blows them out of the water. On a recent trip to Dennys, the bacon I ordered was thin and shrivel. The bacon here is in nice long, crispy strips. The shredded hash browns are also well portioned - they don’t skimp! And that’s pretty rare nowadays.

The portions are big, but what about the taste? Well, the taste is what you expect to get. It’s wholesome and savory where it needs to be. The food here is down to earth and exactly what you’d want from a diner experience. When I finished I felt full and satisfied… and probably wanted to go on a little walk to get everything settled and tucked in.

One note of recommendation is the freshly squeezed orange juice. They have the regular stuff, but the freshly squeezed juice is many times better. There are tiny little bits of pulp and you get that true orange flavor that’s missing from OJ that is from concentrate.

Also, if you’re into omelettes, Serrano’s has you covered with a multitude of different kinds to choose from. And for lunch, you could go for a big juicy burger, sandwich, or salad. You really can’t go wrong with any of these items as Serrano’s has each item they make down and down the right way.

The decor around the restaurant is nothing to write home about - it’s serviceable. Serrano’s isn’t going for any sort of trendiness. It’s just salt of the earth good food delivered at reasonable prices and good portions.

I’d love to come back just about every day… but I’d probably need to purchase some bigger pants.
